The road to Wimbledon has sadly ended!

On Saturday 1st July 2023, a captivating tennis match took place at Cromer Tennis Club, Nicole Hobson reports.

"Although our aspirations of reaching Wimbledon were ultimately dashed, we had a great afternoon, the sun shone, and we revelled in the delightful atmosphere at Cromer."

Sue and Nicole, who had previously triumphed in the 'Play your way to Wimbledon' club competition a few weeks earlier had earned their spot in the tournament at Cromer.

The journey to the picturesque venue was made even more enjoyable as Sue's husband, Mike, kindly drove us - allowing us to conserve our energy for the upcoming games.

"The ball seemed to have a mind of its own, bouncing off in unexpected directions. The wind also joined in the fun, swirling the ball up and down and making for wild tennis at times."

Exemplary spectating from Wendy and Mike (with Doris and Gemma)

Under the radiant July sun, Sue came prepared with delicious snacks to keep everyone energised throughout the matches - and Wendy brought Doris and Gemma to cheer us on.

The canine duo made some delightful new ‘small friends’ who insisted on playfully tugging them around via their leads, although Gemma seemed a bit less thrilled by the playful antics.

Despite the grass courts at Cromer showing a bit of character with their worn spots, they added an extra element of surprise to the match. The ball seemed to have a mind of its own, bouncing off in unexpected directions.

The wind, also joined in the fun by swirling the ball up and down, making for wild tennis at times.

We had numerous deuce games – in the end we didn't come out on top with wins, but we definitely showed our strength in adapting to the unpredictable court and weather conditions. Our resilience was both as strong as Sue’s serve, and our ability to find humour throughout the day.

Although our aspirations of reaching Wimbledon were ultimately dashed, we had a great afternoon, the sun shone, and we revelled in the delightful atmosphere at Cromer.

Despite the defeat, we found solace in the fact that we had the opportunity to play in such a stunning location and were supported by Wendy's

and Mike’s enthusiastic presence and cheering from the side-lines.

[Well done both! There's always next year... Ed.]
